Language Requirements – B2 Level Proficiency

Who do the requirements apply to?

The obligation to confirm proficiency in the language of instruction (English or Polish) at a minimum B2 level applies to candidates from outside:
– The European Union (EU),

When and how is the language proficiency level verified?

Language proficiency must be confirmed already at the admission stage by presenting a language certificate or another recognized document.

Programs in Polish

Candidates applying for programs taught in Polish must present one of the following documents confirming their proficiency in Polish across four language skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) at the B2, C1, or C2 level:

Recognized documents:

  • Certificate of proficiency in Polish as a foreign language, as referred to in Article 11a, Section 2 of the Act of 7 October 1999 on the Polish Language (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1556, and of 2025, item 622).
  • Certificate confirming proficiency in Polish issued by: European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages (ECL), or telc GmbH, WBT Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH (TELC).
  • Certificate of completion of a preparatory course for undertaking studies, as referred to in Article 60, Section 4 of the Act of 12 December 2013 on Foreigners (Journal of Laws of 2024, items 769, 1222, and 1688, and of 2025, items 619, 621, and 622) – the course must last a minimum of 9 months.
  • Diploma of graduation from studies conducted in Polish issued by a higher education institution operating within the system of higher education and science of the Republic of Poland.
  • Diploma of graduation from first-cycle, second-cycle, or long-cycle Master’s degree programs in the field of Polish Philology or Applied Linguistics (with Polish language), issued by a foreign higher education institution, along with a diploma supplement or a certificate confirming that the number of hours of Polish language classes was at least 500 hours.
  • Certificate of acquiring the right to practice the profession of a sworn translator issued by the Minister of Justice, as referred to in Article 5, Section 2 of the Act of 25 November 2004 on the Profession of Sworn Translator.

Programs in English

Candidates applying for programs taught in English must present one of the following language certificates confirming their proficiency in English across four language skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) at the B2, C1, or C2 level:

Recognized certificates:

  • University of Cambridge, ESOL Examinations: B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), C2 Proficiency (CPE), B2 Business Vantage (BEC Vantage), C1 Business Higher, Certificate in English for International Business and Trade (CEIBT).
  • University of Cambridge, ESOL Examinations / British Council / IDP IELTS Australia: International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – minimum 5.5 points.
  • Trinity College London: ESOL Skills for Life – Level 1 (B2) or higher, Integrated Skills in English (ISE) – ISE II or higher, ISE Digital – score above 80 points (B2).
  • Educational Testing Service (ETS): TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test) – minimum 72 points, TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) – minimum: 785 points (Listening & Reading), 150 points (Speaking), 160 points (Writing).
  • Pearson Assessment English: Pearson English International Certificate – paper-based or computer-based version (formerly Pearson Test of English General (PTE) / London Tests of English) – Level 3 (Edexcel Certificate in ESOL International Level 1 – Pass, Merit, or Distinction grade) or higher, Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic), center-based or online version – minimum 59 points.
  • LanguageCert (PeopleCert Qualifications – PCQ): LanguageCert International ESOL – LanguageCert Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (Listening, Reading, Writing) (Communicator B2), also known as: LanguageCert International ESOL Communicator B2 Listening, Reading, Writing, together with LanguageCert Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (Speaking) (Communicator B2) / LanguageCert International ESOL Communicator B2 Speaking, LanguageCert Academic – LanguageCert Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) (LanguageCert Academic B2) or higher, LanguageCert Test of English – LanguageCert Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) (LanguageCert Test of English B2) or higher.
  • Education Development International (EDI), London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board (LCCI): English for Business Level 2 or higher, Foundation Certificate for Teachers of Business English (FTBE).
  • European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages: Level B2 (Vantage) or higher.
  • telc GmbH, WBT Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH: Certificate in English, Certificate in English for Business Purposes, Certificate in English for Technical Purposes, telc English, telc English Business, telc English Technical, telc English University.
  • Certificate of completion of a preparatory course for undertaking studies, as referred to in Article 60, Section 4 of the Act of 12 December 2013 on Foreigners, lasting no less than 9 months, confirming proficiency in a given foreign language across four language skills: listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing, at the B2, C1, or C2 proficiency level.
  • Diploma of graduation from first-cycle, second-cycle, or long-cycle Master’s degree programs in the field of philology in a given foreign language or applied linguistics, issued by a higher education institution operating within the system of higher education and science of the Republic of Poland or a foreign higher education institution, along with a diploma supplement or a certificate confirming that the number of hours of classes in that foreign language was at least 500.
  • Diploma of graduation from first-cycle, second-cycle, or long-cycle Master’s degree programs issued by a higher education institution operating within the system of higher education and science of the Republic of Poland or a foreign higher education institution, containing information about the language of instruction, and if the diploma does not contain such information – an additional diploma supplement or a certificate containing information about the language of instruction.
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma – with reference to the primary language.
  • European Baccalaureate Diploma – with reference to the first (L1) or second (L2) language.
  • Certificate of acquiring the right to practice the profession of a sworn translator of a given foreign language issued by the Minister of Justice, as referred to in Article 5, Section 2 of the Act of 25 November 2004 on the Profession of Sworn Translator, or a certificate confirming entry on the list of sworn translators of a given foreign language.
