History of the University

Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce

A classical university since 2011. The history of the institution dates back to 1969 and covers 55 years of development – from the Higher School of Teacher Education, through the Higher School of Pedagogy and the Jan Kochanowski Świętokrzyska Academy, to the Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences and the present Jan Kochanowski University. The University and its predecessors have educated more than 160,000 graduates to date.


History in brief

1969

The Higher School of Teacher Education in Kielce is established; 249 students begin studies in 6 fields.

1974

The Higher School of Teacher Education is transformed into the Higher School of Pedagogy.

1979

The University receives its patron – Jan Kochanowski.

2000

Granted the status of the Jan Kochanowski Świętokrzyska Academy.

2008

Becomes the Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce.

2011

Receives the status of a classical university and the current name: Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce.

University structure

The JKU comprises the Collegium Medicum and the following faculties: Humanities, Science and Natural Sciences, Pedagogy and Psychology, Law and Social Sciences, Fine Arts, as well as the JKU Branch in Sandomierz (since 2016, following the incorporation of the former State Higher Vocational School).

  • Collegium Medicum: as of 1 October 2024, two faculties were established – the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • Faculties: Humanities; Science and Natural Sciences; Pedagogy and Psychology; Law and Social Sciences; Fine Arts.
  • Branch: JKU Branch in Sandomierz.

Infrastructure

JKU has a modern campus on Uniwersytecka Street in Kielce, owns buildings in the very center of the city, and maintains a student town in the city center.

Science and research

We conduct research projects and programs at regional, national, and international levels, also supporting the commercialization of research results.

  • Research on the history of the Holy Cross Sanctuary and its monuments
  • Experiments on proton, hadron, and nucleus collisions in CERN laboratories
  • Research station at Raj Cave
  • Center for Pancreatic Disease Research
  • Botanical Garden beneath Karczówka Hill in Kielce

Academic life

The University’s activity extends beyond science and research. We participate in major events in the fields of art and sports, co-creating the identity of the Świętokrzyskie region.
